Buying Guide

What Should You Look for in a Projector?

The concept of "money per inch" is one of the most straightforward approaches to calculating the cost-effectiveness of various home viewing solutions. After making the decision to watch a movie on a large screen, there really is no alternative because projectors today provide an image quality that is virtually identical to that of televisions. Televisions continue to have fixed screen sizes, with the largest being approximately 80 inches. You could certainly get a larger set, but with that type of money, you could even be able to own your very own theater. Not to be confused with the homemade variety. In contrast, Projectors provide an unrivaled value for the money when it comes to displays that go beyond the capabilities of television panels. In contrast to televisions, which suffer from a strong case of diminishing returns (for example, an 85-inch screen costs five times as much as a 65-inch screen but only gives negligible improvements for the vast majority of viewers), projectors do not experience this issue. The expense of upgrading from an 80-inch screen to a 200-inch screen is relatively low, and while the quality of the projected image is unaffected regardless of screen size, you get to experience the full effect of the larger screen.

Projectors are your only option for flexibility until technology is developed that will allow flat-panel televisions to adjust their size based on the user's preferences.

Despite the portability that modern projectors provide, there is something quite reassuring about having a room or area in your home that is solely devoted to watching movies. So it's safe to assume that you already have a place in mind.

When putting everything together, what do you think the most important factors are that need to be taken into account?

1. Amount of Light Present

Projectors function most effectively in dimly lit rooms or other environments that provide the display of the greatest possible amount of detail across all forms of information. On the other hand, this is something that naturally shows to be difficult to achieve in the actual world. We recommend a room or area in which you have a greater degree of control over the illumination. Although modern projectors have specialized modes and technologies designed to maintain good image quality in a variety of light conditions, we still recommend using such a device in a location where you have such control. Choose a place that has a limited number of windows, windows that are tiny in size, or windows that can be readily covered when necessary. A living room with big floor-to-ceiling windows that face either the east or the west would not provide for a nice viewing environment. On the other hand, a spacious study with just one window that has dark-colored curtains will work wonderfully, as will a basement if you have one.

2. Short or Long Throw Distance?

To make things easier to understand, throw distance refers to the distance a projector needs to travel in order to display an accurate image on a screen that is 100 inches in size. Because they do not require a great deal of space to project a large picture, Short Throw Projectors are an excellent choice for large displays that need to be installed in smaller rooms. You have a great deal of versatility with projectors that have a long throw. They perform wonderfully with large displays from any distance, giving you more flexibility in terms of mounting possibilities.

The projectors should preferably be pointed towards the center of the screen, regardless of whether they are fixed to the ceiling or set at seat level. However, if you are unable to do so because of the conditions of the room, such as the furniture, there are two technologies that can assist you. Images that are projected off-center are readjusted by Keystone so that you do not miss any of the picture as a result of it "dropping off" the screen. However, there is a possibility that the image quality would suffer after keystone correction. For this reason, good projectors also feature lens shift functionality. When combined, keystone correction and lens shift provide you the opportunity to position your projector in more areas without causing any reduction to the image quality.

When it comes to the distance between the projector and the screen, we recommend between 1.5 and 2.5 meters for rooms that are small to medium in size (4.9-8.2ft.). The ideal height range for large rooms is between 2.5 and 4 meters (8.2-13.1ft.). All measurements were taken at a distance of 100 inches from the screen.

3. Type of Screen

The materials that are used to make the screen that you use for projection are, in my opinion, equally as significant as the size of the screen that you use. The vast majority of displays can function very well if they are white or a light gray, but because there are so many different types and deployment technologies, things might become complicated. The ability of screens to "reject" light is the single most significant feature in screen visibility; this allows light to be reflected back to the viewer, where it may then be perceived. Therefore, viewing content on a dark screen would not result in very enlightening experiences. In order to optimize projection efficiency and reduce the loss of information, more recent displays make use of specialized technologies that either bounce or reject light.

Screens can be permanently installed in a space or they can be easily moved. If they are motorized, you could have them roll up or drop down into specific alcoves. This raises the question of whether you would like a remote control or a localized switch to regulate screen movement. Standard frames are used to hold more reasonably priced screens in place, but over time these screens may acquire creases and warping, which will impact the image consistency. Tab tensioned designs use force to keep the screen evenly flat in order to combat these issues; nevertheless, the cost of these devices is obviously higher.

In theory, for the most authentically cinematic experiences, we would suggest using a motorized roll up screen that is tab tensioned and light rejecting. These three characteristics provide the highest possible and most long-lasting visual quality, in addition to a very elegant and reassuring experience. However, the portability and cost of these solutions are compromised as a result.
